fall '23 microgrants awarded đź’«

We are pleased to announce our fall 2023 microgrant recipients! With this program, students apply for up to $250 to support digital and/ or experimental projects that are grounded in humanities-based approaches to the study or expression of Black life.

It's important to note that the AADHum microgrant program is open to both graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Maryland, the University System of Maryland, and Morgan State University. Applications are due the first day of every month, through April.

Our fall cohort also includes Himadri Agarwal and Fatima Seck, who will use their microgrant to support their Kitchen Studios residency. You can learn more about their project and AADHum's Kitchen Studio program here!

Attica Podcast and Digital Memorial | Carolyn Robbins

Carolyn Robbins is a graduate student in the Department of Communication. Their project aims to curate an abolitionist counter-story about the Attica prison uprising of 1971. Using audiovisual records from the incarcerated men, Carolyn will record a podcast chapter and create a digital memorial "to honor and center the stories of the men the state tried to silence."

Capstone Album | Myia Tamara Elum

Myia Elum is an undergraduate student majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies, studying music and Black rhetorics of America. The microgrant will support the recording of a six-track album – a self-narrated exploration of "the hidden curriculum that is African American history during my education at a Predominantly White Institution (PWI)." Myia will write comprehensive liner notes for each track, contextualizing the album as an educational resource celebratory of Black culture, justice, and joy.
